For decades, the residents of Purok Sunflower in Barangay Binubuhan lived without electricity, relying on kerosene lamps and makeshift lighting to get through the nights. Access to electricity, a basic necessity for many, remained an unattainable dream for this small yet resilient community. However, a new chapter began as Negros Power fulfilled its commitment to bringing light and progress to their lives.

On a momentous day, the long-awaited Sitio Electrification Program officially switched on power in Purok Sunflower, illuminating nearly 90 households for the first time. The project is the longest power line constructed under Negros Power’s electrification initiative, spanning 36 spans with 60 newly installed electric poles and three transformers. This development marks a significant step in the company’s goal to energize all areas within its franchise in the next three years.

A Community Transformed

For many residents, the arrival of electricity is life-changing. Amelita Boltes, a 71-year-old resident, expressed her relief and gratitude. “Living without electricity has been very difficult. At my age, having proper lighting at home makes a huge difference, especially at night when it can be dangerous,” she shared emotionally.

Jobert Quatero, the Purok President, also emphasized how long the community had been waiting for this moment. “Some of our neighbors passed away without ever seeing electricity in their homes. We have dreamed of this for years, and now, thanks to Negros Power, our purok finally has light,” he said.

Negros Power’s Commitment to Progress

Negros Power’s dedication to rural electrification is evident in its actions. Roel Z. Castro, CEO and President of Negros Power, reaffirmed the company’s mission to bring electricity to all sitios. “We want every community to have electricity, just as the cities do. We are committed to making this happen, and we will follow through on our promises,” he stated.

The ceremonial switch-on was attended by key officials from Negros Power, alongside local government leaders from Bago City and Barangay Binubuhan. Bago City Mayor Nicholas Yulo acknowledged the significance of this milestone, stating, “We supported this new franchisee because we knew they had the resources to expand electrification. We are grateful to be prioritized by Negros Power, and we are confident that in a few years, 100% of Bago City will be energized.”

Vice Mayor Ramon Torres echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that Purok Sunflower is only the beginning. “You should be proud to be the first in Bago City to benefit from this program. More sitios will soon receive the same service,” he said.

This initiative by Negros Power not only lights up homes but also ignites optimism for a brighter future. As the company continues its mission to energize rural areas, many more communities in Central Negros can anticipate the day when their homes will no longer be shrouded in darkness but filled with the promise of light and development.
