Negros Power Safeguards Electricity Supply Amid Mount Kanlaon Eruption

Negros Power Safeguards Electricity Supply Amid Mount Kanlaon Eruption

Mount Kanlaon’s eruption on December 9, 2024, brought challenges to communities in Negros Occidental, as ashfall blanketed parts of Bago City and Murcia. Amidst the natural disaster, Negros Power stepped up to ensure that reliable electricity remained a priority for its customers.

The Impact of Ashfall on Power Infrastructure

The volcanic ash posed several risks to the power network within Negros Power’s franchise area. Among these challenges were:

  • Insulator Flashover: Ash contamination could lead to insulator failures, causing power outages.
  • Overloading: Accumulated ash on lines risked damage and disruptions.
  • Structural Damage: Ash weakened poles and other structures, increasing the potential for collapse.
  • Tree Falls: Heavily ash-laden trees posed threats by falling onto power lines.
  • System Malfunctions: Ash entering HVAC systems at substations reduced performance and disrupted operations.

Mitigating Risks with Proactive Measures

In response to these challenges, Negros Power initiated a robust cleaning operation. As of December 22, the company achieved significant milestones:

  • Water-Flushing Operations: Nearly 450 primary or feeder line pin insulators were cleaned.
  • Equipment Replacement: About 130 damaged insulators were replaced.
  • Progress Rate: These actions represented a 77% accomplishment rate, with efforts ongoing to fully restore the network.

Negros Power also implemented preventive measures to safeguard equipment from ash ingress, ensuring the continued operation of critical infrastructure such as substations.
